Lab safety show
The special show on occupational safety and health and safety in the workplace by asecos explains how quickly hazardous situations or accidents can happen in laboratories and how workers can protect themselves, colleagues and employees.
The topics at a glance:
• Ignition sources, fires and explosions
• Storing and handling hazardous materials safely
• Recognizing and avoiding health hazards
This live experimental lecture will show how laboratories can ensure that their safety protocols are up to date and fit for the challenges of the 21st century. Experts will explain how to store and handle chemicals correctly in the laboratory. Protective and preventative measures, labeling hazardous materials and legal guidelines are also discussed.

Storage of hazardous materials in 21st century laboratories
Date and times:
Tuesday, 9 July: 10.45 – 11.25, Meghan Magnussen, LASEC
Wednesday, 10 July: 10.45 – 11.25, Sascha Kunkel, asecos
The Lab Safety Show is supplemented by the following presentation:
New hazards, new challenges
As technology evolves, new hazards emerge. One of the areas of concern is the increasing use of lithium ion batteries. Improper storage and handling of these fuel cells can lead to severe fires which are very difficult to manage.
The presentation will be looking at the underlying causes for lithium ion battery fires and examine ways to effectively mitigate these hazards. Other fast growing trends are additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping. The metal powders used, such as titanium or magnesium, can create serious health and safety risks which need to be addressed properly. In the final part we will be dealing with risks caused by the use of specialty gases in laboratories and research facilities.
